President Donald Trump asked the business community for a list of regulations to be scaled back or eliminated, and many associations responded with a lengthy list of environmental and labor rules that could be targeted, the Washington Post reported.
The White House received more than 168 public comments in response to a Jan. 28 presidential memorandum asking the Commerce Department to look at trimming regulations to boost manufacturing. More than 80 percent of the comments came from associations and manufacturers, according to the newspaper.
Among the recommendations:
- Pavement Coatings Technology Council wants to prevent the U.S. Geological Survey from studying the environmental impacts of coal tar.
- U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants to reduce the amount of time opponents can challenge federal projects from two years to six months.
- Associated Builders & Contractors want Trump to repeal 11 of former President Barack Obama's executive orders and memorandums, including one requiring paid sick leave for government contractors.
Clean water and clean air regulations were among those most targeted for cuts by the business community, a Post analysis found. Regulations on exported goods and employee overtime were also named, as were rules requiring corporations to disclose whether they are purchasing "conflict minerals" from armed groups in war-torn African nations. http://wapo.st/2oPnXxZ
